Cool filmi moms' fave mom roles

Cool filmi moms' fave mom roles
Some of the coolest onscreen moms pick their favourite mom roles
Swara Bhaskar ('Nil Battey Sannata')
Fave mom role: Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts in 'Stepmom'
Swara Bhaskar plays mother to a 15-year-old girl in 'Nil Battey Sannata' and toils hard to educate her daughter. She says that when she thinks of the best portrayal of motherhood on screen, Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts from the movie 'Stepmom' come to mind.
1x1 polls
'The two mothers from 'Stepmom' are my favourite. Both of them ' Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts ' show in a very real way their struggle with motherhood while their lives fall apart in other ways. They struggle with their identities as career women, wives, lovers and friends. It's nice to see a film about mothers that shows real details, as opposed to ideal motherhood. For the same reason, I loved Ratna Pathak Shah's role in 'Kapoor And Sons' also,' says Swara.

Shabana Azmi ('Neerja')
Fave mom role: Nirupa Roy in 'Deewar'
Shabana Azmi, who plays Sonam Kapoor's mother in 'Neerja', says that her favourite mother from Indian cinema is Nirupa Roy's role in 'Deewar'. She says, 'She is upright, dignified and is presented as the keeper of her children's conscience. She remains a pillar of strength throughout the film and depicts the quintessential Indian mother.'

Swaroop Sampat ('Ki & Ka')

Fave mom role: Supriya Pathak in 'Ram-Leela'
Swaroop Sampat plays the modern, friendly, uber-cool mom to Kareena Kapoor in Ki & Ka. But her favourite Bollywood mother is Supriya Pathak's domineering character in Ram-Leela. She says, 'I saw Supriya Pathak in Ram-Leela and loved her portrayal. I would love to do such a role, but I won't suit such a character. Nobody would cast me in such a role because people say that I look vulnerable. The Ram-Leela mother was wicked too. I told Supriya also how much I loved her in the film. I don't like such kind of moms in real life, but I loved the portrayal. I also like my role in Saptapadii (a Gujarati film). I don't play a mother in the film, but a mother figure. My character stands up for the kid against everyone, including her husband. My role in this film, or in Ki & Ka, and Supriya's role in Ram-Leela are not of weepy mothers. Usually, moms are shown crying in films, but these characters were shown as strong women.'

Dolly Ahluwalia ('Vicky Donor')
Fave mom role: Nargis in 'Mother India'
Dolly Ahluwalia's portrayal of the typical Lajpat Nagar mom in 'Vicky Donor' was loved by everyone. However, her favourite onscreen moms are very different from her character. She says, 'I loved Nargisji in 'Mother India' and Nirupa Roy in 'Do Bigha Zamin'. They were real mothers and anyone can relate to them.'

Supriya Pathak ('Ram-Leela')
Fave mom role: Meryl Streep in 'Mamma Mia' and Dina Pathak in 'Khubsoorat'
Supriya Pathak in 'Ram-Leela' plays the chieftain of the gun-wielding Sanera clan, who wants full control over her daughter's life. However, her favourite onscreen mother is the cool, hippy character of Meryl Streep from 'Mamma Mia'. Another memorable onscreen mom portrayal for her is by her own mother, Dina Pathak, in 'Khoobsurat'. 'I think that in both Bollywood and Hollywood, we have wonderful mother roles. I particularly remember Meryl Streep from 'Mamma Mia'. I would love to play a role like that myself. Also, a Hindi movie that comes to my mind is 'Khubsoorat', where my mother played the role of a very strict mother. That is again something that even I would want to do. However, I think I would like to play it a bit differently.'
